What is feeding you right now?

August 3, 2020 | By Vickie Wu, BHFH Resident Chef and Kitchen Manager

Hello friends,

This is Vickie Wu, the Resident Chef and Kitchen Manager here at BHFH. Jen asked me to introduce our digest this week, and, because it’s my passion, I want to write about food.

What I like about food — and “comfort food” — is less the food itself (though delicious) but the ways we attach memories to it, and the ways that it evokes those memories each time we eat it.

Comfort food for me is the food that reminds me of people, places, or experiences.

Food feeds us physically, but the real nurturing, in my mind, has always been the emotional component. In my work as the Resident Chef, I am lucky to not only provide physical nourishment, but it’s also my goal to create a space where we can all just be, together. To feed and love our spirits as well.

But feeding ourselves doesn’t have to involve the taking in of calories!

As we nurture ourselves through these challenging times, I invite you to think about what feeds your spirit.

Does it make you feel closer to people you can’t be physically close to right now? Does it lift your mood, help you grow, strengthen, and deepen? What are you doing to nurture and nourish yourself, whether physically or spiritually?

In nourishment and community,

Vickie Wu

P.S. If you want to continue this conversation, join me this Wednesday at MIDWEEK: Experiments in Faithfulness! I’m facilitating a practice called “Food and Love: Nurturing, Nourishing, and Connecting.” You can register here.
