The 2019 Weed Memorial Lecture: “…and Covenant” with Emily Provance

“We are made to fit together like a set of puzzle pieces.”
Beacon Hill Friends House is honored to welcome Emily Provance to deliver the 2019 Ernest and Esther Weed Memorial Lecture, entitled “…and Covenant: Spiritual Gifts and the Beloved Community”:
We are not all the same.  Some of our differences are blessedly God-given.  We are organizers, prayers, workers, carers, innovators, provocateurs, and healers.  We are made to fit together like a set of puzzle pieces, as we name, affirm, and nurture spiritual gifts and ministries.
But some of our differences are not God-given.  Some of our differences are imposed by society and circumstance.  Race, age, country of origin, gender identity, economic status, and many other factors influence how others see us and how we see ourselves.  How does this affect the puzzle pieces?  How does it affect the ways in which we understand the whole?
We can move forward stumblingly, powerfully, persistently, and always together when we remember that we are a covenant people, as we read in Jeremiah: “You will be my people, and I will be your God.”
About Emily Provance
Emily Provance is a member of Fifteenth Street Meeting and thinks of New York City as home, though she now travels in the ministry full time.  She came to Friends after seventeen years of searching for a faith community.  She understands the Religious Society of Friends to be a covenant community and has spent time with Friends from various branches of the tradition in Kenya, Belize, Britain, Ireland, Tanzania, Palestine, Mexico, Peru, and the United States.
