“When we listen to each other’s stories, we hear nuance”
“On Wednesday, February 3, Elizabeth Nugyen kicked off our Refugee Stories series. Elizabeth is a Unitarian Universalist (UU) Minister, advocate for UU Youth and Young Adults of Color, activist, and founding board member of the Lucy Stone co-op, a UU house modeled in part on our house. She is also the daughter of a Vietnamese immigrant, and shared her story of being raised in a family of refugees in the midwest and southern United States. I was particularly struck by the way Elizabeth spoke about the difference between the way anti-war UUs spoke about the war in Vietnam, and the feeling of gratitude that her family members felt for the US for coming to their defense. When we listen to each other’s stories, we hear nuance that is often unavailable, and are confronted with complexities that are less apparent to us if we are just watching the news or reading history.
